Great Britain have won the bronze medal at the men’s under-16 men’s Riga Hockey Cup in Latvia.
After four wins from six matches in the group stages, GB were beaten in this morning’s semi-final but secured third place with an impressive victory over Jelgavas LSS in the bronze-medal game.
Semi-final: Great Britain 0-2 Stockholm Golden Wings
Great Britain were beaten 2-0 by Stockholm Golden Wings in the semi-finals of the Riga Hockey Cup.
After a scoreless first period, Lucas Brauer put Stockholm ahead in the second session (22:28).
Brauer scored his second of the game on the powerplay (43:42) to secure victory for the Golden Wings.
Bronze-medal game: Great Britain 3-2 Jelgavas LSS
Great Britain capped off a memorable weekend and won the bronze medal with a 3-2 victory over Jelgavas LSS.
GB went ahead in the first period through Daragh Spawforth (10:55) before Ethan Lock scored a second (22:02).
Artis Duklavs closed the gap to make it a one-goal game (28:41).
Theo Malone made it 3-1 in the third period (33:10).
Jelgavas hit back again through Kristians Melbardis (42:35), but GB stood firm to secure third place in the 14-team tournament.
Head Coach, Jamie Elson, said: “It’s been a really positive weekend all round. On the ice the players all really bought into what was asked of them and showed a real togetherness.
“They battled for eight games over three days and from a coaching perspective really showed us what they are capable of. It’s a year group with great potential for the future.
“Off the ice it really felt like a GB team. The guys had great spirit and chemistry and were a close-knit team. It’s a positive weekend and given us a great insight into this group of players as they move forward.”
