The World Girls’ Ice Hockey Weekend (WGIHW) is a global opportunity for girls to try out hockey as a new sport, led by the IIHF.
Thousands of participants have taken part worldwide since the start in 2011, with hundreds of players being involved in the UK in that time.
This year’s event was held by the Nottingham Vipers, delivered in partnership with Ice Hockey UK and the National Ice Centre.
Players arrived at 11am before joining in some welcome games which helped participants to get to know each other. All players then went to collect equipment and get kitted-up ready for the on-ice session.
The girls were given an introduction to ice hockey, learnt how to skate, stickhandle, pass and shoot before putting their skills to the test in a mini game.
After the session, all participants received an invite to join the Nottingham Vipers and spectate a future match.
Ryan Rathbone, Head of Ice Sports at the National Ice Centre & Motorpoint Arena Nottingham, said: “WGIHW has been a key part of the Nottingham Vipers’ development plan, helping to grow female hockey in Nottingham from just one team to three over the past two years.
“Membership has also seen a significant rise, increasing from fewer than 20 players in 2022 to over 80 today.
“The event provides a valuable opportunity to promote female hockey globally, breaking down barriers to participation in a fun, safe, and inclusive environment.
“It gives female players in Nottingham the chance to experience the excitement and enjoyment of being part of the sport.
“WGIHW also enables us to leverage international coverage and PR to highlight the benefits of female hockey and continue growing the game.”
